The levatores costarum is one of two groups of segmental muscles deep within the back.
The second group of segmental muscles includes the interspinales and the intertransversarii.

- Short paired muscles arising from transverse processes of C7-T11
Insertion
- the rib below vertebra of origin near tubercle

- Contraction elevates rib
