Hyoglossus Muscle

Hyoglossus Muscle The structure indicated is the hyoglossus muscle of the tongue. The hyoglossus muscle is one of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue. The muscles involved with the tongue consist of intrinsic muscles which lie within the tongue itself, and the extrinsic muscles which attach to the tongue and are responsible for depression, elevation, protraction and retraction of the tongue. There are four sets of extrinsic tongue muscles: Genioglossus Hyoglossus Palatoglossus Styloglossus Origin: Greater horn and body of hyoid bone Insertion: Lateral aspect of tongue Action: Depression and retraction of tongue Innervation:  Hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII) Learn all …

Genioglossus

Genioglossus The structure indicated is the genioglossus muscle of the tongue. The genioglossus muscle is one of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue. The muscles involved with the tongue consist of intrinsic muscles which lie within the tongue itself, and the extrinsic muscles which attach to the tongue and are responsible for depression, elevation, protraction and retraction of the tongue. There are four sets of extrinsic tongue muscles: Genioglossus Hyoglossus Palatoglossus Styloglossus The genioglossus is a large muscle which extends anteriorly from the chin, to the tongue. The genioglossus is involved in depression and protrusion of the tongue. Origin: Superior …

Fungiform Papilla

Fungiform Papilla The structure indicated represents a fungiform papillae, one of the four types of lingual papillae found on the surface of the tongue. There are four types of lingual papillae found on the tongue: Circumvallate papillae (top right) Fungiform papillae (bottom left) Filiform papillae (bottom middle) Foliate papillae (bottom right) The only papillae not associated with taste buds are the filiform papillae. Fungiform papillae are mushroom shaped and contain taste buds on their upper surface allowing distinction of all five modalities of taste: Bitter Sweet Sour Salty Umami

Styloglossus Muscle

Styloglossus Muscle The muscle indicated is the styloglossus muscle       . The styloglossus muscles is one of three styloid muscles. The three styloid muscles are: Styloglossus Stylohyoid Stylopharyngeus Origin: Styloid process of temporal bone Insertion: lateral aspect of tongue Innervation: Hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve 12) Action: Elevation and retraction of the tongue The styloid muscle is one of several extrinsic muscles of the tongue. Learn all about the extrinsic muscle of the tongue in this anatomy tutorial.
